Could you send out more information about the terrain?

Has anyone out there ridden any of the singletrack on this course? I’d like to know what the terrain is like (rocky, rooty, narrow, steep?) I’m trying to figure out how long it will take me, as I get pretty cautious when things get dicey!

Sheli,
The course has alot of climbs and downhills both long and short. Some of the trail gets a little sandy at times. The CD trail sections aren’t to steep and are in very good condition. Unfortunately there is some pavement to ride in the first ten miles. I’m still working on getting the final course map down and published but should be done by the end of next week.

Thanks Bob. So . . . nothing “technical,” as far as the singletrack goes?
July 13, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Sheli,
Sorry I have been slow in responding.
Most of the single track is “easy technical” however there are a couple sections on the 100 mile course that is “hard technical”. One is on a climb that has been torn up by moto cross riders, this will have to be walked. One other is a short rocky drop about 20 feet long.

Thanks again. That doesn’t sound too bad; I think I can handle it!

Had a couple of questions regarding butte 100. What is the deadline for registration? Postmarked Aug 2? The web reg actually lists Aug 8 11:59pm as the deadline. Im not sure if I’ll have the day available and want to reg as late as possible. Also wondering what the aid stations will consist of so that I can know how to plan/pack for the race. Thanks, Pete

The race terrain for the 50 mile leg was outstanding! There were, as you know, some course marking issues. After the Highland aid station and the fast downhill on the dirt road I originally missed the right turn for the CDT. Yes, it was marked, but with the high speed I didn’t notice it at all and luckily a vehicle behind me honked their horn until I stopped and turned around. Maybe at that “head down, racing tuck” speed there needs to be more blatant markings or a head’s up at the aid station to catch that turn.
Then at the top of this trail is where I truly lost the course. I got to the top, crossed the fence, and I believe missed the course from that point. I ended up back down on the Fish Creek Road and ended up reriding several miles of the course to end up back at the Highland Aid Station. In the end I added 10 miles to route.
Thanks for putting the race on, I repeat that the quality of the terrain was outstanding!! The CDT sections were great, especially Homestake and Pipestone. The Archery Range route was rough and not much more than bushwacking through the grass, but the trail it eventually intersected was a very fun downhill trail. Thanks again, I’ll be there next year!

I write this today, 9-1-08, very sad. Yesterday a new and one of a group of new very good friends lost his very best friend. Bill lost Marcy. Go to Bill’s wb page for pictures of Marcy and give Bill your support in his time of pain.

The 2009 Butte 100 will be held August 1st, 2009. The course will change slightly with an additional Continental Divide Trail. Also the CD trail that was ridden after Aid Station 8 (Highlands campground) will be ridden from the top of Limekiln down to the campground then on to the new CDT. This year there will be volunteers stationed at all course intersections that one might get lost or make a wrong turn. The 100 milers will have a small change after Nez Perse that will keep them off the Delmoe Lake Road. This change will be the route that I was suppose to use in the 2008 race but changed at the last week before the race. That change caused some trouble between myself and the Forest Service. Also I have been getting the GPS’s done for the entire 100 mile and 50 mile courses. These will be available to load onto indivdual units.
more later,
Bob

anyone feel like doing a MTB ride New Years day.
January 27, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I went over to Pipestone this past Saturday for a ride, that was the coldest temp I have ever experienced at Pipestone. Wouldn’t have been so bad but I forgot my skull cap. I went back to Butte and rode behind Tech, much warmer. Bill Martin has organized what he is calling The Butte Endurance Mountain Bike Summit here in Butte the weekend of Feb. 7th and 8th. We plan on riding both days at Pipestone. If anyone is interested let me know. Have a fantastic day!!
